The anguish in the boy’s voice was enough to cause tears to well. Blinking, the elderly man replied, first with a gentle stroke of the boy’s hair, and then with what he’d hoped were comforting words.
“Rhitia oft fell to temperatures like these. Once the caravan stops we’ll light a fire and huddle close.”
“Rhitia? Where’s that?”
The man shuddered at the thought. His exodus began after the storms had raged nearly a fortnight. He’d been one of the fortunate few to board a ship before the world began to shatter.
“That was home.”
